About Hubble

The Hubble Space Telescope has been one of the most important scientific instruments in history since its launch in 1990. Orbiting at about 535 km above Earth, it avoids atmospheric distortion to capture extraordinarily detailed images of distant galaxies, nebulae, and stellar phenomena. Hubble has contributed to breakthroughs in measuring the expansion rate of the universe, characterizing exoplanet atmospheres, and observing objects billions of light-years away. It orbits Earth every 95 minutes at approximately 7.59 km/s.
